The Mendoza Message for the

Week of May 23, 2025

Please remember, there is NO School on Monday, May 26th for Memorial Day. Also, as the school year is getting closer to the end, we have a number of activities planned.  Please look at the bottom of this newsletter.

Due to all of the rain we have received this week, the decision was made to postpone Field Day today.  Remember, Field Day takes place in the large field behind Lawton, by the upper elementary playground, and after Mr. Stewart investigated its status last night and early this morning, the decision was made to postpone for the safety of the students (it is very wet and slippery) and the integrity of Mr. Stewart's equipment.

Let’s not forget- Talent Show!  We hope you can join us at our 2nd Grade Talent Show! We are excited to have many acts from our classes join the show! It will take place on Thursday, May 29the at 1:45 pm in the Auditorium. Please ensure that your child brings what they need to showcase their talent on this day, if he/she has entered the show.

Note: Please keep in mind this is an amateur show for both students and teachers. It is just for fun. We will do our best with music/tech/timing etc. Please remind your child to practice and to have fun!

Also, the 2nd Grade End of the Year Picnic will be on Thursday, June 5th.  Here is the Sign-up Genius.

Finally, the Ice Cream Social.  It is on Friday, June 6th.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly. The children are taking off their coats/sweatshirts when they are outside for recess and forgetting to bring it in.  Therefore, there are a large number of items in the Lost and Found.

If you would like to volunteer in the building during school hours you will need to complete this background check:  Complete Volunteer Background Check 24-25

Completing the background check allows you to be with children during the school day, class parties, and to chaperone field trips.  If you think you might be helping out at any time during the year, please fill it out now.  Don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Again, here is the QR Code to the Amazon “Wish List”, since I have added some items.

Remember, please charge the laptop to 100%, so it is ready for use in the classroom for Monday.

TRAILS: This Week in SEL

This week’s lesson focused on reviewing all of the decision making skills we have learned in TRAILS. We discussed how we have to solve big and small problems every day. Sometimes we can solve them on our own, sometimes we can solve them with a friend, and sometimes we need an adult to help solve problems. It can be tough to make decisions when there isn’t a “right” answer. We often can feel stuck in determining the best choice.

We listed the steps we can take when we need to make decisions or solve problems:

Grades K-2: PAUSE-BREATHE-THINK-CHOOSE

Grade 3-5: Notice the Problem, Name the thoughts/feelings, Brainstorm solutions, Think about consequences, Reflect on solution.

We are ready to apply our responsible decision making skills at school, at home and in our community!

Also, this is allergy season.  There are a number of students with watery eyes,

TRAILS: This Week in SEL-Setting and Achieving Goals!

This week, our students learned that working toward a goal takes practice, persistence, and a positive mindset! We talked about how everyone has worked hard to get better at something—whether it’s reading, playing a sport, or making new friends. To help us stay motivated, we learned two helpful strategies: breaking big goals into smaller, manageable steps and using our own strengths and past successes to keep going. Ask your child what goal they’re working on and how they plan to reach it!

I want to say “THANK YOU” to all of you.  You made Teacher Appreciation Week a special and wonderful week!!! I truly appreciated everything that came in this week- THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

I hope all of the mothers and mother figures have a wonderful Mother’s Day!!

Remember, on Tuesday, your child will be taking a field trip at Freeman Environmental Educational Center from 9:30-2:00.  Please click here (or look down below) for the letter about the field trip.  You should have the paper copy at home (it was originally attached to the permission slip). Please read it carefully.  This way your child is prepared for this field trip. We have talked about the importance of wearing pants, long sleeves, boots or closed toed shoes with socks.  Also, since your children are learning about Zero Waste, we have discussed packing a lunch that has very little waste.  Your child CAN use their lunch bag, reusable plastic containers, water bottles, etc. Again all of this information is in the letter.

Next, we have an Early Release Day on Thursday, May 15th.  Dismissal will be at 1:00 pm.

TRAILS Understanding our Values

Our lesson this week focuses on values or those things that are very important to us. What rules are important to your family? What characteristics does your family value? And what do we consider to be important? These discussions are great for the whole family to participate in. Do we value the same thing in the school setting or are there differences? Our values act as a compass and can guide us to make decisions and notice what is most important to us.
