The Mendoza Message for the

April 22, 2025

We are truly enjoying this beautiful weather. In the classroom, we have been learning about Earth Day, and how we can take care of the Earth- not just on Earth Day, but everyday.

The students enjoyed themselves at our Field Trip to Ella Sharp Museum.  Below are photos of our field trip.

Remember, Wednesday, April 23rd is an Early Release Day.  Dismissal is at 1:00pm.

A field trip form for our next field trip went home yesterday.  Please return it back as soon as you can.

Also, remember to turn in the Talent Show form by May 5th, if your child would like to be in it.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly. The children are taking off their coats when they are outside for recess and forgetting to bring it in.  Therefore, there is a large number of coats in the Lost and Found.

If you would like to volunteer in the building during school hours you will need to complete this background check:  Complete Volunteer Background Check 24-25

Completing the background check allows you to be with children during the school day, class parties, and to chaperone field trips.  If you think you might be helping out at any time during the year, please fill it out now.  Don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Again, here is the QR Code to the Amazon “Wish List”, since I have added some items.

Remember, please charge the laptop to 100%, so it is ready for use in the classroom for Monday.

Our SEL work continues on with a focus on - Maintaining Relationships

This week’s lesson focused on maintaining our relationships. : In some of our previous lessons, we learned how to make new friends and how to treat our friends in a way we also want to be treated. This week we thought about and then shared what makes a good friend. Being respectful is one important way to keep our relationships with others healthy, even when we disagree.

The Mendoza Message for the

April 11, 2025

This has been a very cold week.  Yet, the children had a little visit from Bertie on Thursday to warm them up.  Look below for some of the photos of Bertie’s visit.

Our field trip is on Thursday.  Thank you for the chaperones who were able to pick a different day to chaperone.

Please remember- your child needs to bring lunch.  They will be eating at Ella Sharp.   Also, pay attention to the weather.  We will be walking outside.

As it is mentioned below, there will be a 2nd Grade Talent Show on Thursday, May 29th in the afternoon.  A time will be determined and shared with you as soon as we can.  A letter of all the information you will need will be sent home soon.  In the meantime, here is some information, so you can start a conversation about the Talent Show. I did talk about it with the class. Your child has the option to participate in the Talent Show.  If your child is interested in being in the Talent Show, your child can do a solo, partner or group performance.  If your child is doing a partner or group act, your child can be with another 2nd grader (not just in my classroom). Next, the performance can only be 3 minutes long.  Also, it has to be school appropriate-including the music. Lastly, your child will need to practice the performance on their own time.  We will not be practicing it here at school. Again, a letter will be coming home soon.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly. The children are taking off their coats when they are outside for recess and forgetting to bring it in.  Therefore, there is a large number of coats in the Lost and Found.

Our SEL work continues on with Lesson 19 -Dealing with Conflict

In this week’s lesson, we’ll learn that conflict is a normal part of relationships and that differences in thoughts and feelings can sometimes lead to conflict. We’ll review helpful skills for managing conflict and discuss how choosing the right behaviors can make a situation better, while hurtful behaviors can make things worse. Remember, if a problem is dangerous or happens over and over, it’s important to ask an adult for help. But many conflicts can be solved using the skills we’ve already learned!

The Mendoza Message for the

April 7, 2024

As the saying goes- “April showers will bring May flowers.”  We have a number of rain showers (and major rain storms) this week.  Hopefully, all of this rain will bring in beautiful flowers in May.

We currently have an overabundance of chaperones for this trip. This is a good problem to have! Thank you to those that have volunteered!  We have 2 more field trips planned this year. If you would like to opt out of chaperoning this trip and wait for one of the upcoming trips, please notify me and I will pencil you in for one of our future trips. The upcoming trips we have planned are:

1 May 2nd: Tappan Middle School to see their performance of Moana, with our former theater teacher, Ms. Strassel, as the director. This is a morning trip.

2 May 13th: All day Environmental Field Trip to the Freeman Environmental Education Center.

Spring is officially here. So, please remember to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  You never know what the temperature will be from day to day.  Your child still may need some type of boots for those rainy/muddy days.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly. The children are taking off their coats when they are outside for recess and forgetting to bring it in.  Therefore, there is a large number of coats in the Lost and Found.

TRAILS
Our SEL work continues on with Lesson 18 in the area of Relationships Skills. In the first lesson in the area of Relationship Skills, the goal was dedicated to establishing relationships. In this week's Lesson, we are working on the target of Communicating Clearly, the first step being able to listen and hear and see what is being said. Time will be given to sharing our feelings as well as recognizing that our bodies communicate too, particularly our faces. Listening can be a hard skill to practice especially if you have something you really want to say or if you are having big feelings. If you want to learn alongside your kiddo, investigate the book, My Mouth is a Volcano by Julia Cook and Carrie Hartman.
