The Mendoza Message

for

January 31, 2025

It was nice to have a warmer week.  Just sad that it was rainy today. Wednesday was the Lunar New Year.  Happy New Year to those who celebrate it!

Here is a friendly reminder. There are a lot of germs, fever, coughing, stomach bugs etc. in 2nd grade class right now. Please keep your child home if they are presenting any symptoms.

We had a wonderful assembly today.  The Wayne State Dance Company 1 group performed for us.  The children really enjoyed it.

Wednesday, February 5th is Global Play Day! Please click here for the Global Play Day Letter.  Below is a PDF version of the letter just in case

NAAPID is on Monday, February 10th. If you will like to stop by our classroom for a visit, see the times below for the best time:

9:30-10:20: to work in your child’s classroom to work on a literacy activity

10:20-10:50: Gym (Join you child in gym until the assembly starts)

10:30-11:00: Story teller Assembly in the MPR (lunch room)

11:30-12:18: Lunch and recess with your child in the lunchroom and playground

12:30-1:30: Art (Join your child in the Art room)

See the filer below for the events scheduled throughout the day.

Also, our simple class Valentine’s Day celebration will be on Wednesday, February 12th.  This is only a class celebration. There is no need for parent volunteers that day. We only decorate our Valentine bags, pass out Valentine’s and have a simple snack. Please click here to go to the Sign-up Genius on items that are needed for our snack. Remember, if your child is passing out Valentine’s, they are to pass out Valentine’s to all classmates.  One other item, passing out Valentine’s is an option. There are 24 students in our class.  Below is a class list.

Also, February 12th is the 101st Day of School! We will enjoy a day of thematic activities that day.  If your child would like to wear black and white clothing, spotted clothing or puppy ears, etc they can. Because we are celebrating Valentine’s Day and the 101th Day of school, I am still working on a schedule for the day.

If you would like to help out at Lawton during school hours (lunch helper, chaperoning field trips, etc.), you will need to fill out a form.  Here is the link. If you want to volunteer at Lawton.  I would encourage you to do it as soon as you can.  It can take some time before you are cleared.  Also, once you are cleared, it is good for the entire 2023-2024 school year.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly, especially now. The Lost and Found gets filled quickly during the winter months.

If you would like to volunteer in the building during school hours you will need to complete this background check:  Complete Volunteer Background Check 24-25

Completing the background check allows you to be with children during the school day, class parties, and to chaperone field trips.  If you think you might be helping out at any time during the year, please fill it out now.  Don’t want to wait until the last minute.

Again, here is the QR Code to the Amazon “Wish List”, since I have added some items.

Remember, please charge the laptop to 100%, so it is ready for use in the classroom for Monday.

TRAILS LESSON 12

Next week, our building-wide focus in Trails will be  to practice self-care. We may take steps daily to care for our minds and bodies and to help us stay healthy and strong. We can also make plans to take care of ourselves when we start to feel tired, down, or worried. Our bodies are like engines – they need good fuel to run and work all day long. Some of the things we talked about, like eating and sleeping and fun activities, will help fuel our minds and bodies and keep us feeling strong all day long!

The Mendoza Message for the

Week of January 24, 2025

There is not much to share in this newsletter. Due to the weather, we were only together in the classroom on Thursday and Friday.

Please remember that there is an Early Release Day on Wednesday, January 29, 2025.  Dismissal will be at 1:00pm.

The 2nd graders did a wonderful job singing at the MLK performance yesterday. At the bottom of this are the photos from the assembly

Next week will hopefully be a warmer week than this week.   Again, please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  I always tell the children that boots and snow pants not only do they keep you warm, but also dry and clean from the mud.

By the way, the children moved the snow on the playground and found ice.  Basically, the entire playground (not the blacktop and sidewalks) is one big smooth sheet of ice. Therefore, if you come to the Lawton playground during non school hours, please be safe.  Also, please remind the children to stay away from the icy area during school hours for their own safety.

Another item, some of you might be thinking about Valentine’s Day.  We will not be in school on Friday, February 14th.  Therefore, we will be having a small and simple celebration on Wednesday, February 12th.  Yes, your child will be able to pass out Valentine’s.  But, if your child is passing out Valentine’s, they must pass out one per student.  There are 24 students in the classroom.  One other item, passing out Valentine’s is an option.

If you would like to help out at Lawton during school hours (lunch helper, chaperoning field trips, etc.), you will need to fill out a form.  Here is the link. TRAILS LESSON 11

Next week, our building-wide focus in Trails will be on learning relaxation techniques to manage the uncomfortable feelings that come with stress. We will help students understand that stress is what you sometimes feel when you're worried, uncomfortable, or overwhelmed by too many things happening in your life. Worry can make your body feel tense. Students will also learn that relaxation techniques can be used not only when feeling stressed but as part of their daily routines.

The Mendoza Message

for

January 17, 2025

We had another busy week at school. Your children worked really hard on the NWEA.  Lawton Play Day on Thursday was a great day for your child to enjoy the day with all the hard work they did.

If you forgot, your child’s AADL library book was due yesterday.  Please return the book to any AADL branch.

Remember, there is NO SCHOOL TOMORROW in observance of MLK Day.

Again, this has been a chilly week.  Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. It looks like it will still be very cold at the beginning of next week too.

The 2nd Graders will be singing at the MLK Assembly on Thursday, January 23rd at 10:00 am.  Parents are welcome to come and watch.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly especially now that Winter is here.

Finally, please remember to return their AADL book at any of the AADLs.  Your child’s AADL book is due on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Remember to look at the Lawton Lost and Found regularly, especially now.

If you would like to volunteer in the building during school hours you will need to complete this background check:  Complete Volunteer Background Check 24-25

TRAILS LESSON 10

This coming week, our school will focus on practicing relaxation techniques to help manage the uncomfortable feelings that come with stress. Stress is the feeling you experience when you're worried, uneasy, or dealing with a lot of big events in your life. These worries can affect not only your mind but also your body, making you feel tense or uncomfortable. The good news is that relaxation skills can be helpful not just when we're stressed, but also as part of our daily routines to keep us feeling calm and balanced.
